ASD -Compounding Treatments

Working closely with physicians, has resulted in Your Solution Compounding Pharmacy developing the list below as representative of the most commonly requested compounded products for treatment of Autism:

  Alpha Lipoic Acid
Amino Acid Blend
Amphotericin B
BLT Cream (Benzocaine/Lidocaine/Tetracaine)
Cyanocobalamin (B12)
DMG (Dimethyl Glycine)
Folic Acid (5-MTHF)
Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN)
Malic Acid
N-AcetylCysteine (NAC)
Nutrient (Vitamin/Mineral) Blend
P-5-P (Pyridoxyl-5-Phosphate)
Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6)
TMG (Trimethylglycine)

The above compounds are mostly prescribed for non-conventional cutting edge treatment, may have dramatic therapeutic outcomes, but could vary from patient to patient. Some are discussed below. Others are mentioned on our pages with more information on Nutrition, Advanced Therapies, Primers and Promoters.

Bethanecol can be compounded in various forms and dosages to fit with the special ingestion or absorption requirements and metabolic demands necessary, when treating autistic patients.

Bethanechol (also known as Urecholine), is used to relieve difficulties in urinating caused by surgery, medications or other factors. It stimulates gastric motility, increases gastric tone and often restores impaired rhythmic peristalsis of the intestines. It also increases bile and pancreatic secretions and indirectly stimulates the vitamin A receptors in the brain's hippocampus. It further stimulates the release of acetylcholine at nerve endings.

G Proteins, Vitamin A, and Acetylcholine (Ach) production stimulated by Bethanechol-
Acetylcholine has an important role in the enhancement of sensory perceptions when we wake up and in sustaining attention, which is a typical problem with an autistic patient. It also activates muscles, plays a role in muscle strength and fatigue, learning ability and a person's certainty when facing the surroundings/environment.

Vitamin A is extremely important for the maintenance of healthy intestinal flora. (Generally, the autistic children are deficient in not just vitamin A, but all of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K.)

Mary Megson, a MD, has had some amazing successes treating autism with cod liver oil (for its vitamin A content) and occasionally also prescribing Bethanechol to stimulate the release of acetylcholine. It is reported that within 30 minutes of this dose, some of the patients appear to reconnect and to be able to focus.

She hypothesized that autism may be caused or exacerbated by an interference with G proteins. The cod liver oil she used treated vitamin A shortage, and the Bethanechol increased acetylcholine because G protein defects could interfere with acetylcholine production.

However, not just any vitamin A will do. Dr. Megson feels that the retinol form of vitamin A is absorbed best. This form of vitamin A is found in butter, fish, and liver. Fish oil is the only source of 14 hydroxy-retro-retinol (14-HRR). G protein defects could block the conversion of vitamin A into the 14-HRR form.

According to The Pfeiffer Treatment Centre, patients with one or more of the following symptoms may have the most to gain from this treatment: malabsorption, divergent gaze, speech delay, dry skin, poor social skills, night blindness, soft stools and dry eyes.

Do not hesitate to contact us for more information or should you wish to have your physician discuss this treatment with us.

Pancreatic Enzymes
Abundant anecdotal reports indicate benefits of administrating pancreatic enzymes to treat digestive problems of autistic children. Upon starting pancreatic enzymes, some autistic children show improvements in speech, eye contact, tolerance, awareness of surroundings and self, improved colour, and more understanding. Pancrease capsules used daily have anecdotally been reported to solve problems with loose stools.

Some children however show no change. Other parents report that their children regressed on pancreatic enzymes.

Creon is the most common pancreatic enzymes used. Creon 10 has a delayed release and starts breaking down the food in the intestines only, instead of "on contact".

Vitamin B-12 -(Neubrander Protocol/MB12 mentioned above)

Vitamin B-12 shots have successfully been used for autism. The starting dose is typically 64.5mcg/kg every 3rd day, subcutaneously (buttocks).

Screening tests for a B-12 deficiency include serum and urine methylmalonic acid levels. It is not always necessary to have low levels before benefit from B-12 shots are experienced. B-12 does take some time to work initially, up to a few weeks. When improvement occurs, it typically does so about 2-4 weeks after the first injection and lasts 4 weeks. Some report that up to three months sometimes pass before improvements are seen with B-12.

Folic acid

Folic Acid is a common deficiency among people with bowel disorders, epilepsy and celiac diseases

It is currently intensely studied to determine and understand the role it plays in ASD.

Intramuscular or intravenous magnesium is sometimes helpful, but may also produce increased agitation.

Colloidal Silver
Colloidal silver in a glass of water can also help with alleviating diarrhoea, including frothy and smelly stools. It is often given once a month.

Calcium is often successfully prescribed, especially for patients with twitching when sleeping.

Flower of Sulphur
Flower of Sulfur is supposed to optimise the pH balance in the stomach, thus food is digested improved. It is also noted as a natural chelating agent. Consult with your physician about using sulphur together with DMSA.*
