Peripheral neuropathy is caused by inflammation of the nerves outside the central nervous system. It is commonly associated with diabetes and consists of several clinical types including sensory, motor, automatic and mixed. The most common type is a chronic symmetrical sensory neuropathy (pain associated on opposite sides of the body) affecting the nerves of the lower limbs and often the gastronomic nerves, resulting in pain, skin ulcers and autonomic disturbances (not under voluntary control).
There is little research dealing with non-conventional treatment of peripheral neuropathy, other than in diabetic related cases. Several nutrients and herbals have been shown to help diabetic neuropathy including vitamins B6, B12, C, and E. Inositol, magnesium, zinc, quercetin, gingko biloba, and gamma linoleic acid have shown promise as well. Diabetic cases require specific nutritional considerations (see our Diabetes Wellness Center) which must be closely followed for overall long term positive effects.
Peripheral neuropathies, other than diabetic, have responded to some nutrients such as vitamins B3, niacinamide, folic acid, potassium, vinpocetine and coenzyme Q10. Hypericum perforatum, a homeopathic form of St. John?s wort, has shown promise, as well as other herbs like willow bark, wintergreen, mustard, ginger and Chinese angelica. Stinging nettle, sciatica cress (peppergrass), red pepper (capsicum) and lavender have been used in various topical preparations with some success.
Understanding the cause of peripheral neuropathy can help lead to a more comprehensive wellness support program. In diabetic neuropathy, excessive blood sugar causes the nerve damage. Non-diabetic causes could be exposure to toxic compounds such as mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, formaldehyde, pesticides, aluminum, and numerous other compounds. The liver must break down these toxic compounds resulting in production of nerve damaging metabolites and free radicals. Supplementing with liver protecting herbals such as milk thistle, artichoke and antioxidants like grape seed extract and vitamin E may indirectly help in these cases.

|Lipoec 400 contains 400mg of alpha lipoic acid, the only antioxidant soluble in fat and water. As such, alpha lipoic acid provides extensive antioxidant activity throughout the body, and this is further supported by its ability to regenerate other antioxidants including glutathione, coenzyme Q10 and vitamins C and E. Lipoec 400 also provides nutritional support for glucose metabolism.|

|Chromium Plus contains a unique form of chromium polynicotinate, along with alpha lipoic acid, inositol & vanadium to assist healthy blood sugar metabolism.|
|SUPPORT FOR BLOOD GLUCOSE REGULATION
Yeast free chromium 200mcg is an amino acid chelate, a biologically active form of chromium not derived from yeast. Chromium plays a key role in glucose metabolism and has been shown
to amplify insulin signalling. This effect is directly dependent on the chromium content of chromium binding oligopeptide, or chromodulin.
A chromium deficiency may lead to blood glucose disregulation, insulin resistance and many subtle adverse metabolic events.
Repletion with high dose chromium may improve or restore function and prevent such events.
|TO IMPROVE INSULIN SENSITIVITY AND CARBOHYDRATE METABOLISM
Chromium is required for chromium binding oligopeptide, a low molecular weight chromium binding substance known as chromodulin, which has been shown to potentiate the effects of insulin on the conversion of glucose into carbon dioxide or lipid. This effect is directly dependent on the Cr content of chromodulin. A mechanism for stimulation of insulin receptor kinase activity has been proposed. In response to increased blood glucose, a rise in plasma insulin levels causes the movement of chromium to insulin dependent cells (probably mediated by ferritin) helping to amplify insulin signalling.

|Antioxidants help protect the body from the ravages of free radicals. Free radicals damage our DNA, cell membranes, and our immune system. They are a major factor in ageing, as well as degenerative diseases of the body and brain. Antioxidants are free radical scavengers which neutralize the destructive effects of these free radicals. Daily intake of antioxidant supplements as part of a healthy lifestyle protects us from the damages of these harmful free radicals. AntiOx Excel features a scientifically formulated blend of nutrients and herbal extracts to provide maximum protection against free radical induced damage. AntiOx Excel may be beneficial for oxidative stress, detoxification processes and as an adjunct for disease conditions that require antioxidant support|
|Essential fatty acids are "good fats" that are absolutely necessary for the reproduction of cells. We also need them as part of the many natural biochemical processes of the body. They are called "essential" because each cell in our body needs a supply of them each and every day. They are also called "essential" because they must be taken in from our diets or in supplement form. As part of a healthy lifestyle, supplementing daily with essential fatty acids helps to keep our bodies functioning at their peak. This formula combines the beneficial omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids which are most important to our health. Omega-3 EFAs are utilised by the body in several key areas that help influence general wellbeing. As phospholipid components of cell membranes throughout the body, they support healthy cell function and fluidity. Additionally omega-3 EFAs provide anti-inflammatory activity, and also support the maintenance of healthy brain function and healthy triglyceride levels.|
